Charles A. Whitten Medal (AGU Union Medal)

The American Geophysical Union awards the Charles A. Whitten Medal biennially in even-numbered years to a senior scientist for outstanding achievement in research on the form and dynamics of the Earth and planets, with typical nominees working in geodesy, nonlinear geophysics, planetary sciences, seismology, or tectonophysics. The honorary award includes an engraved medal, recognition at AGU’s annual meeting, two Honors Reception tickets, and may confer Union Fellowship and induction into the AGU College of Fellows if membership criteria are met. Nominees must be experienced senior scientists and established leaders; nominations may be peer or self-submitted but nominators must be active AGU members, and all parties must adhere to AGU conflict-of-interest and professional conduct policies; candidates are evaluated on quality, impact, originality, and breadth of audience.
