Charles A. Whitten Medal (AGU Union Medal)

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) awards the Charles A. Whitten Medal biennially to a senior scientist for outstanding achievement in research on the form and dynamics of the Earth and planets, typically recognizing work in geodesy, nonlinear geophysics, planetary sciences, seismology, or tectonophysics. The honor includes an engraved medal, recognition at AGU’s annual meeting, two Honors Reception tickets, and conferral of Union Fellowship/induction into the AGU College of Fellows if membership criteria are met. Nominations (peer or self-nomination permitted) must be submitted via an active AGU member nominator during the listed window (5 January–2 March) and all parties must comply with AGU conflict-of-interest and professional conduct policies. Candidates must be experienced, established leaders whose work demonstrates high quality and impact, originality/innovation, and a record of reaching broad or underrepresented audiences.
