About this program

Wenner-Gren Foundation offers Conference and Workshop Grants to support inclusive anthropological conferences (large, public events, ideally engaging international audiences) and small, focused workshops that advance innovative research and produce lasting outputs; maximum award is $20,000 and funds do not cover institutional overhead or administrative fees. Applications are submitted online in English (alternative arrangements available for those with limited internet access); portals open two months before the stated seasonal deadlines (June 1 and December 1), the Foundation will accept proposals up to two years in advance, and reviews typically take 4–6 months. Primary organizers must hold a doctorate in anthropology or a related field (graduate students may be listed as co-applicants), an individual may not serve as primary or co-organizer on more than one application per season, and current grantees must complete existing award requirements before receiving new funds. Eligible events exclude annual national association conferences, panels/sessions within larger meetings, or gatherings open to non-participating auditors; awards prioritize covering costs for international scholars and require compliance with U.S. law/OFAC (with additional documentation for sanctioned locations) and prior approval for substantial event modifications.
