David Baumgardt Memorial Fellowship

About this program

The Leo Baeck Institute awards one annual David Baumgardt Memorial Fellowship to support archival and scholarly research related to Professor David Baumgardt’s writings and interests (including ethics, Wissenschaft des Judentums, and the modern intellectual history of German‑speaking Jewry), providing up to $7,500 toward project needs. Recipients are expected to make extensive use of LBI’s New York facilities—particularly the David Baumgardt Collection—must expend funds within the award year, and support for travel or family members is not available. Eligible applicants are academics affiliated with an accredited institution, including doctoral and post‑doctoral candidates; applications (emailed to Dr. Frank Mecklenburg) must include a CV, full project description, financial plan, evidence of highest degree or enrollment, transcripts for doctoral candidates, and two letters of recommendation (for doctoral candidates one must be from the advisor). Applications are due by November 16 (decisions announced in January), and fellows must submit a brief report on their research upon conclusion.
