Doctoral and Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

About this program

The German Historical Institute (Washington) offers short-term doctoral and postdoctoral research fellowships to support projects based on primary sources principally located in North America, with priority fields including German and European history, German‑American relations, international relations involving Germany and the USA, and North/Pan American history. Fellowships are normally 1–4 months (occasionally extendable by one month), provide monthly stipends of €2,000 for doctoral and €3,400 for postdoctoral scholars plus a subsidy toward round‑trip airfare, and do not fund preliminary research, manuscript composition, or revision. Applicants must be based at (or recent graduates of) North American or European universities or research institutes; doctoral applicants must be ABD before starting the fellowship, and postdoctoral proposals are preferred if designed as a “second book” (Habilitation or pre‑tenure equivalent).
