Doctoral Dissertation Stipend

About this program

The Catholic Biblical Association awards up to five Doctoral Dissertation Stipends of $5,000 each (up to $25,000 total) to Ph.D., Th.D., or S.T.D. candidates actively writing dissertations in biblical or related studies (D.Min. candidates are not eligible). Applicants must be CBA members enrolled in an accredited doctoral program and submit a completed application form, a CV (no more than two pages single‑spaced), an official academic transcript (certified copy or copy with a signed authenticity statement), and a letter from the dissertation director confirming completion of coursework and successful passage of comprehensive exams (director should send that letter to cba-office@cua.edu with subject "[APPLICANT'S LAST NAME] Dissertation Stipend Reference"). Applications must follow formatting rules (letter or A4, 12‑pt standard Roman font; citations count toward page/word limits), be emailed to CBA-Office@CUA.edu with subject "Doctoral Dissertation Stipend Application" by April 1, and incomplete or incorrectly formatted submissions will not be considered. Awards are merit‑based with preference for applicants who have not recently received CBA grants; awardees must submit a report at the conclusion of the award period and are expected to present supported research at the Annual General Meeting within two years.
