Family Medicine Student Organization Grant Program

About this program

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) supports the Family Medicine Student Organization (FMSO) grant program to fund student-led activities that grow and diversify the family medicine workforce and advance primary care. Two grant streams are offered: Core Grants for family medicine–based groups (tied to FMIG registration each January–March with funds disbursed in June) and Special Grants for new or innovative projects promoting family medicine (reviewed on a rolling basis with application deadlines Nov 30, Jan 31, and Mar 31). All student organizations may apply for Special Grants, while family medicine groups (e.g., FMIGs, ACOFP student chapters) are eligible for Core Grants; specialty groups may apply for both. Award amounts vary by group and proposal strength—family medicine specialty interest groups can receive up to $1,000 (combined Core and Special), other student clubs up to $500—and proposals should include basic group information for Core Grants and a clear plan showing how the project will elevate or advance family medicine for Special Grants.
