About this program

The Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) funds competitive grants across basic, translational, preclinical and clinical research to accelerate therapeutic development for Friedreich’s ataxia and fosters collaboration through forums, workshops and the International Congress for Ataxia Research. Applicants may be academic or for‑profit investigators and projects must align with FARA’s Scientific Advisory Board priorities (e.g., disease mechanisms, drug discovery, translational tools, clinical research); many programs require a Letter of Intent and participation in FARA-organized activities. Multiple award mechanisms support trainees to senior investigators—examples include graduate fellowships (~$50,000/year), postdoctoral and clinician scientist awards (~$100,000/year), and translational or ad‑hoc awards up to $200–$250,000/year—with specific deadlines and budget limits posted on the grant submission portal.
