Fernand Braudel Prize for an Outstanding Student Research Project in Mediterranean Folklore

About this program

The American Folklore Society Mediterranean Studies Section offers the Fernand Braudel Mediterranean Folklore Student Prize, a $500 honorarium for an outstanding student research project on Mediterranean folklore, historical or contemporary, across any folklore topics that reflect the region’s ecology and history where relevant. Submissions must be original research (fieldwork and/or bibliographic) and may be an academic paper (20–30 pages), honors thesis, blog post, or alternative media such as an 8–15 minute podcast or short documentary; papers should follow the Journal of American Folklore style and all entries must be submitted electronically by midnight July 15. Eligible applicants are advanced undergraduate and graduate students in folklore or allied disciplines; previously published work is ineligible and only one submission per person is allowed. To facilitate blind review, remove your name from the project itself and include your name only in a cover letter, and arrange for a professor or sponsor to send a separate letter of support to AFS.
