About this program
The Planetary Society’s Gene Shoemaker Near-Earth Object Grants support amateur and professional astronomers conducting observations to discover, track, and characterize near-Earth objects, strengthening planetary defense and asteroid-risk assessment. Grants may support efforts such as improving observational capabilities and contributing data to the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center. Eligible applicants are amateur or professional astronomers with the expertise and facilities to undertake NEO observation projects; applicants must meet the requirements detailed in the program’s Request for Proposals.
