About this program
The Planetary Society’s Gene Shoemaker Near-Earth Object Grants support amateur and professional astronomers conducting observations to discover, track, and characterize near-Earth objects, strengthening planetary-defense efforts. Funded activities may include astrometric follow-up, physical studies, and equipment upgrades needed for sustained asteroid observations. Applicants should be experienced amateur or professional astronomers capable of carrying out NEO observing projects and submitting useful data to the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center; full requirements are specified in the program’s Request for Proposals.
