About this program
The Planetary Society’s Gene Shoemaker Near-Earth Object Grants support amateur and professional astronomers conducting observations to discover, track, and characterize near-Earth objects, strengthening planetary defense and asteroid science. Funded activities may include equipment upgrades and observations submitted to the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center. Applicants should be amateur or professional astronomers with the expertise and capabilities to conduct meaningful NEO observation programs and must submit proposals consistent with the program’s Request for Proposals.
