About this program
The Children’s Literature Association (ChLA) offers Graduate Student Essay Awards annually to recognize outstanding unpublished scholarship in children’s literature, with separate awards for master’s- and doctoral-level essays. Faculty members or graduate students may nominate eligible work electronically between December 15 and February 1. Essays must be 3,000–7,500 words, follow MLA, APA, or Chicago style, demonstrate engagement with prior scholarship and original ideas, and be anonymized for review. Students may receive the award only once at each degree level; self-nominators may submit one essay, while outside nominators may submit up to two essays for different students.
