About this program

The Geological Society of America (GSA) offers Graduate Student Research Grants to provide partial support for master’s and doctoral thesis research across the geological sciences, with specialized recognition awards (e.g., the Jack Kleinman Memorial Award) and typical grants averaging ~$2,688; in 2025 GSA awarded about $900,000 to 354 students. Eligibility is restricted to GSA members who are currently enrolled in an earth‑science graduate program at a university in the United States, Canada, Mexico, or Central America (citizenship not required), and students may receive a maximum of two GSA graduate grants during their academic career. Applications open 1 December 2026 and are due 18 February (11:59 p.m. MST); submissions require an electronic faculty advisor appraisal (advisors need not be GSA members), and awardees must file a progress report by 1 February the following year and provide SSN/TIN information for tax reporting.
