History of Art Grants

About this program

The Samuel H. Kress Foundation awards History of Art grants to advance scholarship, conservation, and public understanding of European art and architecture from antiquity through the early 19th century. Funding supports scholarly research and dissemination projects—archival work, databases and catalogues, exhibitions and publications, technical and scientific studies, professional meetings and exchanges, and mentored museum professional development, including projects using digital methodologies. Grants are made to U.S. nonprofit institutions with 501(c)(3) status (including U.S. supporting foundations or foreign institutions with IRS recognition); the Foundation does not fund individuals, and international applicants must designate a U.S. fiscal sponsor that provides an IRS determination letter and a letter confirming vetting and willingness to administer funds without taking indirect costs. Applications begin with a Letter of Inquiry submitted via the Foundation’s online portal and are reviewed in two annual cycles.
