Ida Halpern Fellowship and Award

About this program

The Society for Ethnomusicology administers the Ida Halpern Fellowship and Award to support research on Native American music of the United States and Canada and to recognize subsequent publication, providing a $4,000 research fellowship (awarded at the Annual Meeting) and a $1,000 post-publication prize. Eligible applicants are established scholars, recent Ph.D. recipients, or Ph.D. candidates who have completed all program requirements except dissertation research, with preference for work based on Dr. Halpern’s Northwest Coast collection; recipients may not reapply for three years. A complete application consists of a research proposal (maximum four single‑spaced pages, including references), proposed budget, current curriculum vitae, names and contact information for two references, an advisor’s letter verifying candidacy if applicable, and a letter of Native community support for new research; the selection committee may withhold the award. The fellowship/prize is awarded biennially (odd years), the next deadline is April 1, 2027, and applications are submitted via the SEM online form.
