About this program

Jeffris Family Foundation’s Jeffris Heartland Fund offers $5,000–$50,000 grants to support the preparation of Historic Structure Reports and related planning for significant historic preservation projects in small towns and cities in eight Midwestern states (IA, IL, IN, MI, MN, MO, OH, WI); award notices are typically issued about 30 days after application. Grants cover up to 50% of HSR costs and require a dollar-for-dollar cash match from sources unrelated to the Foundation, and applicants must consult a Foundation Director before applying to receive the application and technical assistance. Eligible applicants are established 501(c)(3) nonprofits or government agencies partnered with a 501(c)(3), and projects must be individually listed on—or demonstrably eligible for—the National Register of Historic Places and supported by preliminary planning documents showing readiness for an HSR. Additional conditions include community population limits (under 150,000), prohibition of in‑kind services or organizational overhead as match, conformity with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards, and completion and reporting of the study generally within one year.
