W. W. Smith Charitable Trust offers one‑year grants (typically $100,000–$125,000, including 10% indirect costs) to support basic medical research addressing heart disease, cancer, and AIDS. Eligible applicants are 501(c)(3) nonprofit universities, hospitals, and research centers located in the five‑county Greater Philadelphia region (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, Philadelphia) or the City of Camden, NJ; awards fund individual investigator projects (not center general support) and may cover direct costs such as salaries, travel, equipment and supplies, though funds will not be awarded solely for equipment. Each institution may submit one application per discipline (Heart Disease, Cancer, AIDS), applications must be submitted online with relevant published materials, and are due July 15 by 11:59 p.m. EST; proposals are peer‑reviewed externally and decisions are communicated after the Fall Trustee meeting (typically by December 1).
