MMUF Dissertation Grant

About this program

Funded by The Mellon Foundation and administered by the Institute for Citizens & Scholars, the MMUF Dissertation Grant provides up to $30,000 for 12 months of dedicated dissertation writing. Applications open September 1 and close December 4, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. ET. Applicants must be alumni of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship, Ph.D. candidates in an eligible humanities, social science, or physical science field, and have completed coursework, comprehensive examinations, dissertation topic approval, and most or all required research. Applicants must arrange their own health insurance, and awards may be reduced by other dissertation funding so total support does not exceed $30,000.
