Montine M. Freeman Scholarship in Native Plant Studies

About this program

The Garden Club of America (GCA) offers the Montine M. Freeman Scholarship in Native Plant Studies to support research, documentation, teaching and practical training focused on underutilized native plants, including projects in plant propagation and techniques for incorporating native species into managed landscapes. One or more scholarships are awarded annually at a minimum of $3,000 to support study at an accredited college, university, or major botanic garden or arboretum. Eligible applicants are U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are college undergraduates, graduate students, advanced degree candidates, or non‑degree students above the high‑school level and are actively enrolled at a U.S.-based institution; the GCA cannot fund international applicants. Applications must be submitted electronically or by mail to be received at GCA Headquarters by February 1 preceding the period of study, and only one GCA scholarship/fellowship/award may be applied for each year; recipients are selected by a committee chaired by the Scholarship vice chair.
