Norman Newell Early Career Grant Program

About this program

Paleontological Society’s Norman Newell Early Career Grant Program awards up to six individual grants of $5,000 each to early-career paleontologists (Ph.D. completed within the last five years) who are members in good standing to support research-related expenses such as domestic/foreign travel, fieldwork, and equipment (funds may not be used for salary, stipends, tuition, institutional overhead, or publication costs); preference is given to projects outside the Arthur Boucot topical areas. Applicants must be members of the Paleontological Society, may apply from anywhere except countries subject to U.S. OFAC sanctions, and may submit to only one Society early-career grant (Newell or Boucot) per funding year; recipients cannot apply for the other or for a second award. Applications require a single-spaced, 5-page proposal (≥10 pt) with specified sections, a 2-page CV, and two letters of recommendation sent independently to grants@paleosoc.org. Complete applications and letters are due February 1 (late submissions not considered), awards are announced by May 1, and recipients must submit a brief research report (up to 4 pages) by May 1 one year after the award; inquiries to Dr. Phil Novack-Gottshall or grants@paleosoc.org.
