About this program

NTSAD (National Tay-Sachs & Allied Diseases) Research Initiative Program funds investigator-led research to advance treatments and cures for Tay‑Sachs, Canavan, GM1 gangliosidosis, and Sandhoff diseases, prioritizing screening and registries, clinical trial readiness (biomarkers, patient‑centered outcomes), and therapeutic development (gene editing, cell therapy, delivery systems). Grants are typically one- or two‑year awards ($2,000–$75,000 one year; $20,000–$140,000 two years), with indirect costs capped at 5% and two‑year awards subject to a year‑one progress review; NTSAD also provides non‑monetary support such as letters of recommendation and facilitation of collaborations. RFPs are by invitation and open year‑round; investigators and clinicians with projects aligned to NTSAD’s mission should contact research@ntsad.org to discuss potential proposals, which undergo review by NTSAD staff, the Scientific Advisory Council, external experts, and final board executive committee approval.
