Nursing research funding is small, concentrated and much more winnable than its size suggests. A few dozen programs are open at any time, from a short list of organizations that fund almost nothing else.

The Southern Nursing Research Society runs the largest block. Beyond it, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, the Oncology Nursing Society, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and the National Association of School Nurses each run their own programs. Almost all are restricted to members, and nursing society membership is inexpensive relative to the awards.

Research projects are the largest category and the median award is $5,000. These are seed-scale grants by design: the field's funding structure assumes a small society award produces the pilot data for a federal application, and reviewers here are used to reading modest budgets.

Doctoral and graduate students are eligible for a larger share of these programs than faculty. Much of the work nurses do is filed under health rather than nursing, so check that hub as well.
