Outstanding Dissertation Award (Immigration and Ethnic History Society)

The Immigration and Ethnic History Society (IEHS) offers the annual Outstanding Dissertation Award, a $1,500 prize presented at the IEHS banquet during the Organization of American Historians to recognize an outstanding dissertation in U.S. and North American immigration and ethnic history. Eligible dissertations must be written in English, focus on North American immigration and/or ethnicity, and have been successfully defended between October 1, 2024 and September 30, 2025. Applicants must submit a copy of the dissertation to outstandingdissertation@iehs.org and arrange for their major advisor to send a supporting letter; submissions and letters will be shared with committee members. The deadline for the described cycle has passed; details for the next competition will be posted in May 2026, and awardees without funds to attend the banquet may request limited financial assistance.
