Paul Charosh Independent Scholar Fellowship

About this program

The Society for American Music offers the Paul Charosh Independent Scholar Fellowship to support independent scholars researching American music, providing an initial $1,500 award and waived conference registration; recipients are expected to attend and participate in the Society’s annual conference. Eligible applicants are independent scholars who do not teach at institutions of higher education or who teach only under non‑renewable contracts of one year or less; no specific degree is required and both SAM members and non‑members may apply. Applications must include an overview of engagement with American music, a 500‑word maximum research narrative, one to two sentences on how conference attendance will benefit the project, a statement of any employer support, and a current CV or resume; the deadline is listed on the site as October 15. Awardee participation details are arranged with the award committee and Board, and the recipient’s name, presence, and nature of participation will be noted in the conference program.
