About this program
PEN America offers the PEN/Phyllis Naylor Grant for Children’s and Young Adult Novelists, a $5,000 award to support authors of high literary caliber working on a novel-in-progress. The grant, funded by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, aims to assist writers at a critical career stage to complete their work. Eligibility is limited to writers of children’s or young adult fiction who have published at least one warmly received but commercially underperforming novel, with a manuscript that will not be published before April 1, 2025. Self-published works, graphic novels, picture books, and co-authored manuscripts are ineligible.
