The Philip M. Smith Graduate Research Grant for Cave and Karst Research

About this program

The Cave Research Foundation offers the Philip M. Smith Graduate Research Grant for graduate research in cave and karst studies, typically awarding four to six grants of $1,000–$3,000 annually. Projects may address cave- or karst-related topics in any earth, natural, or social science and should preferably support a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation. Applicants must be enrolled at a degree-granting institution; U.S. and international students may apply, but materials must be in English. Applications are due March 1, 2026, and require a proposal, abstract, budget and schedule, CV, and two reference letters, including one from the graduate advisor or committee chair.
