Ralph A. Gallagher Travel Grant Competition

About this program

The Association for the Sociology of Religion (ASR) offers the Ralph A. Gallagher Travel Grant Competition, allocating a total of $12,000 annually to help members defray costs of attending the ASR Annual Meeting and presenting research. Two applicant categories are supported: international scholars and doctoral students residing outside the U.S. and Canada (eligible for up to $500 toward airfare plus reimbursement for up to two nights in the conference hotel) and U.S./Canada-based doctoral students and early-career scholars without stable institutional travel support (eligible for reimbursement for up to two nights in the conference hotel). Applicants must be ASR members, submit a paper proposal via the regular submission portal (indicating Gallagher Grant), and upload a single Word/PDF containing a CV; a 1,000–1,500-word extended abstract; a statement of financial need and evidence of ability to finance travel absent the grant; requested hotel nights and airfare (for international applicants); and willingness to share a room. Applications are submitted via the ASR member portal (typically due March 13), reviewed by the International Liaison Committee with notifications around April 15 and award amounts announced by the end of June; funds are applied to the conference hotel bill or reimbursed for airfare and recipients must stay in the conference hotel, with final payment potentially contingent on visa outcomes.
