Research Fellowship for Indigenous Communities (John Carter Brown Library)

About this program

The John Carter Brown Library at Brown University offers the Research Fellowship for Indigenous Communities to support community-prioritized and community-based research that requires use of the Library’s Early Americas collections (15th–19th centuries). Fellowships run two to four months, include a $2,500/month stipend, and may be residential or remote; awards are made on a rolling basis. Eligible applicants include Native/Indigenous scholars, Elders, tribal librarians or archivists, knowledge keepers, and other community members—no academic affiliation is required—while individual applicants must supply a letter of support from a tribal representative describing community benefit and the researcher’s qualifications. Awards are open to U.S. citizens and foreign nationals who hold the necessary U.S. government documents, and proposals must demonstrate reliance on materials uniquely available at the JCB.
