About this program
The Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era (SHGAPE) invites graduate students in history to submit essays on any topic related to the Gilded Age and/or Progressive Era for its biennial Graduate Student Essay Prize. The winner receives $250 and an opportunity for publication in the peer-reviewed Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. Applicants must be SHGAPE members, and submissions must be original, unpublished essays of no more than 10,000 words, formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style. Entries should be anonymized and emailed as PDFs by December 31, 2026.
