Short-Term Fellowships

About this program

The Newberry Library offers a broad program of residential research fellowships—including 1–2 month Short-Term Fellowships and numerous named and topic-specific awards—to support scholars conducting focused work using the Library’s collections. Short-Term Fellowships fund one- to two-month onsite research visits centered on specific collection items, while many additional fellowships target particular fields, constituencies, or project types (e.g., Indigenous studies, cartography, documentary editing, environmental history, and fellowships for writers). Most awards are open to scholars at the ABD stage and beyond, though individual fellowships carry specific thematic or eligibility requirements; application procedures and deadlines vary, and 2026–27 Short-Term Fellowship applications are currently closed.
