About this program

The Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR) awards the annual $1,000 Stuart L. Bernath Scholarly Article Prize for distinguished research and writing on any topic in U.S. foreign relations. Articles published in scholarly journals or edited books are eligible, with articles in Diplomatic History considered automatically. Applicants must be graduate students or within 10 years of receiving their Ph.D., and the article must be among their first six publications; previous winners of specified SHAFR book awards are ineligible. Nominations for articles published in 2026 must include the article, a concise CV, and a formal nomination letter, and must be emailed to Kaete O’Connell by February 1, 2027.
