The Garden Club of America Fellowship in Tropical Botany

About this program

The Garden Club of America, administered by the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) since October 2023, awards fellowships to promote tropical forest preservation by expanding the number of botanists with field experience in tropical botany. Two or more grants of $5,500 are awarded annually (typically one in tropical plant systematics and one in tropical forest ecology), with recipients selected by an NTBG-appointed panel approved by the GCA Scholarship Committee. Eligible applicants are U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are active PhD candidates in Botany at a U.S. institution and expect to complete degree requirements within two years; applicants may apply for only one GCA award per year. Applications (single PDF to NTBG) must include a personal letter on conservation commitment, a two-page research statement, an advisor’s letter confirming candidacy and progress, a brief CV, and evidence of foreign-language capability if required by the research location.
