The Robert and Ina Caro Travel / Research Fellowship

About this program

Biographers International Organization (BIO) offers the annual Robert and Ina Caro Travel/Research Fellowship to fund travel and archival research for works of biography, awarding up to four fellowships each cycle with minimum awards of $2,500 per recipient. Eligible applicants are biographers writing in English with a work-in-progress that requires travel to locations important to the subject’s life or to archives; submissions are limited to biographies (not history, autobiography, or memoir), while non‑print biographies (e.g., documentary films) are eligible and no publishing contract is required. Application requires a single PDF containing a project description (≤500 words) with synopsis and travel/archival plan, a proposed budget, anticipated result, and an author bio (≤500 words), formatted double‑spaced in 12‑point type with standard margins, plus completion of a signed online entry form (one entry per applicant; no fee); entries are due annually by February 1 and winners are announced by early May. Winners must acknowledge BIO support in resulting publications and submit a brief progress report after travel; direct questions to BIO’s awards administrator.
