U.S. Freelance Science Writers’ Travel Stipend Opportunity

About this program

The American Heart Association offers up to five travel stipends of $2,500 each per selected scientific meeting to U.S. freelance science/health writers who qualify for embargoed access, to defray airfare, ground transportation, meals and hotel. Applicants must be U.S. resident freelance writers who can provide three original bylined news articles published within the prior six months by an accredited national or top‑25 Nielsen market outlet on health/science/medical topics and must not have attended an AHA scientific conference (in person or via video) in the past two years; priority is given to journalists with five years or less experience. Journalists may apply to multiple meetings but may receive only one stipend per year; selected recipients must attend in person, work from the onsite newsroom if available, and attend at least two news briefings or media availabilities. Recipients are required to produce a minimum of three stories based on meeting content within 10 days and submit clips within three months; the Association does not edit or retain rights to the work and selection decisions are final.
