Wadsworth African Fellowship (Doctoral Students)

About this program

Wenner‑Gren Foundation’s Wadsworth African Fellowship provides $20,000 per year (renewable for up to two additional years, with a possible separate year for dissertation write‑up) to support African citizens pursuing a PhD or equivalent doctoral training in anthropology—including archaeology and biological anthropology—at South African universities; funds may cover tuition, travel, living expenses, research costs, taxes, and related fees. Applications are submitted online (portal opens Nov 1) with a December 15 deadline for fellowships beginning the following academic year; the Foundation awards one Wadsworth African Fellowship annually and announces decisions by January 15. Eligible applicants must be citizens and residents of an African country, members of underrepresented groups in anthropology, and either have a doctoral admission pending at a South African university or be within their first year of doctoral training; applicants must have both a host sponsor at the South African institution and a home sponsor from their prior institution, may submit only one application per season, and cannot apply solely for fieldwork or dissertation write‑up support.
