William Barton Scholarship

About this program

The American Heraldry Society’s William Barton Scholarship awards up to $1,500 (typically one award annually) to support junior/senior undergraduates and graduate students in preparing or completing a thesis, dissertation, or equivalent capstone project on heraldry and its auxiliary sciences, with priority for research and presentation expenses. Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited college or university and at the stage of active thesis prospectus preparation—undergraduate juniors/seniors, master’s students (generally after the second semester), or doctoral candidates (normally after coursework)—with projects focused on heraldry, coats of arms, seals, heraldic paleography, vexillology, or related genealogy. Submit an application by July 31 via email to secretary@americanheraldry.org including a cover sheet, ≤750-word project description, itemized budget, one-page CV, unofficial transcript, and an advisor’s letter confirming likely departmental approval; awardees must acknowledge the Society in resulting presentations/publications and may be asked to share their research.
