About this program

The Society for the Advancement of Psychotherapy (APA Division 29) awards three annual Charles J. Gelso, Ph.D. Psychotherapy Research Grants of $5,000 each to support empirical research on psychotherapy process and/or outcome and to encourage graduate students and psychologists conducting quality psychotherapy research. Applicants must be members of the Society and may be graduate students, predoctoral interns, postdoctoral fellows, or doctoral-level researchers; trainees must include a mentor CV and required recommendation letters (students/interns: mentor CV plus two letters including one from the mentor; postdocs: mentor CV plus one mentor letter). Required electronic materials include a 3-page project description, PI CV, 300-word biosketch, timeline (projects completable within two years prioritized), budget and justification (no indirect costs), statement of fund use, completed application form, and combined proposal file with cover sheet; submissions are due March 1 annually and awards may be withheld if criteria are unmet. Grants are paid in one lump sum (to the individual, university grants office, or incorporated company), a W-9 is required and a 1099 will be issued after year-end; recipients must provide final accounting within six months and return unspent funds after two years.
