Chemistry funding outside the federal agencies runs through one very large society and a handful of specialist ones, and knowing the structure is most of the work.
The American Chemical Society is the biggest source here, and its divisions run their own programs on top of the national ones. The ACS Division of Environmental Chemistry, the Green Chemistry Institute Pharmaceutical Roundtable and the Petroleum Research Fund all appear as separate sponsors. Divisional awards are smaller, less contested and far less visible than the society-level ones, and they are the best value in the field for anyone already a member.

Beyond the ACS, the Electrochemical Society runs a substantial program, and the Welch Foundation funds fundamental chemistry in Texas at a scale worth checking if you are eligible.
General awards and prizes are the largest category, ahead of fellowships and travel awards. The median award is $5,000, so this is mostly recognition, travel and student support rather than project funding.
