Chinese Language Fellowship Program

About this program

The Chinese Language Fellowship Program, administered by the National Bureau of Asian Research with support from Carnegie Corporation of New York, funds intensive one-year Chinese language study in China or Taiwan to develop U.S. specialists in contemporary Chinese politics, society, and modern history. Fellowships award up to $50,000 for the PhD Track (nine months plus a summer program with one-on-one classes tailored to dissertation-related primary sources) and up to $40,000 for the Prospective PhD Track (nine months), covering graduate-level tuition, housing, living stipends, and fees. Eligibility is limited to American graduate students: the PhD Track is for currently enrolled PhD students, while the Prospective PhD Track is for current or recent master’s students planning to pursue a PhD; applicants should consult the program website or contact fellowships@nbr.org for application details.
