Consultant Research Awards

About this program

The British Heart Foundation’s Consultant Research Awards provide NHS consultants with protected time to lead an independent cardiovascular research programme alongside clinical duties, for up to two years full time or five years part time. Funding can support salary backfill, research staff, consumables, equipment, travel, professional development, and related costs, with non-salary costs capped at £35,000 per year.

Applicants must hold a substantive NHS consultant post, typically have a PhD or MD, and demonstrate a strong record of academic cardiovascular research; locum consultants and university-based clinicians with substantial research contracts are ineligible. Applications must include a distinct investigator-led research programme and institutional support, with the next deadline on 1 July 2026 at 17:00.
