About this program

Wenner‑Gren Foundation’s Engaged Research Grant awards up to $25,000 (nonrenewable) to support collaborative, community‑led anthropological projects that center interlocutors in shaping research questions, data collection, skill sharing, scholarly communication, and public mobilization to advance anthropology and address inequality. Projects in any subfield or geography are eligible and may fund distinct research phases; the application deadline is August 1 for projects beginning no earlier than April 1 of the following year (portal opens two months before the deadline). The applicant of record must hold a PhD in anthropology or a related field or be enrolled in a doctoral program, and applicant teams must include individuals with lived experience in the research setting and provide documentary evidence of community commitment (e.g., letters, meeting minutes, permits). Grants do not cover institutional overhead; resubmissions are permitted with a response to reviewers, and applicants may not apply for a Dissertation Fieldwork or Post‑PhD Research Grant in the same calendar year.
