Fellowship in Anthropology and Black Experiences

About this program

Wenner‑Gren Foundation’s Fellowship in Anthropology and Black Experiences is a 9‑month writing fellowship (one awarded annually) that provides a $50,000 stipend, cohort-based workshops, and mentoring to amplify scholarship drawing on Black studies, critical race studies, diasporic Africana studies, and vernacular insights from global Black experiences. The program supports projects intended to advance new lines of anthropological scholarship and increase public impact; applications are due December 15 for a fellowship beginning August 1. Eligible applicants must hold a PhD in anthropology or a related field (independent scholars welcome) and be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and should demonstrate substantial progress on a writing project and how the fellowship would enable a critical career juncture. Prior recipients of this Fellowship or a Hunt Postdoctoral Fellowship are ineligible; awarded funds do not cover institutional overhead.
