First Fellowship

About this program

The Neurological Foundation’s First Fellowship funds outstanding early-career postdoctoral researchers to complete their first postdoctoral neurological research project at New Zealand institutions, providing up to two years’ equivalent salary support (FTE may be spread but must be ≥80% per year and total FTE ≤200%), NZD 20,000 research expenses, and eligibility to apply separately for up to NZD 4,500 in travel funding; relocation, equipment and student stipends are not funded and the maximum term is 2.5 years at 80% FTE. Applicants must have submitted or been awarded a PhD within two years of the closing date (extensions permitted for significant leave), be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents or be completing/have completed their PhD at a New Zealand institution, must not have previously held a fellowship, and must nominate a mentor and host institution (mentors generally limited to one First Fellowship application per round). Applications are submitted through the Foundation’s Grants Management System for two annual rounds (closing 18 March and 18 August), require host institution sign-off and mentor support, and are assessed by external reviewers and the Foundation’s Personal Awards Committee with interviews for shortlisted candidates. One resubmission of an unsuccessful application is permitted; applicants should demonstrate potential impact, community engagement (including Māori and Pasifika considerations), realistic timelines and contingency plans, and provide preliminary data and appropriate statistical support.
