Francis H. Brown African Scholarship

About this program

The Leakey Foundation offers the Francis H. Brown African Scholarship, providing up to $30,000 for research and graduate study in earth sciences or paleobotany related to human origins. Funding supports eligible research expenses, including travel, fieldwork living costs, supplies, and other direct project costs, but excludes institutional overhead, salaries, benefits, and publication expenses. Applicants must be graduate students or researchers who are citizens of Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Djibouti, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, Mozambique, Malawi, or Eritrea; postdoctoral applicants must have completed their doctorate within the past 10 years. Applications are due annually on July 15, and applicants must demonstrate a commitment to research and teaching in their country of citizenship.
