Grants-in-Aid for History of the Physical Sciences

About this program

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) Grants-in-Aid supports research in the history of the physical sciences by funding archival travel, oral-history interviews, lodging, meals, research assistance, and related expenses (including transcription/translation). Standard awards are reimbursed up to $2,500 (USD), while oral-history projects involving individuals with significant industry experience may receive supplemental Marc H. Brodsky funding up to $6,000. The program is primarily targeted to graduate students but is also open to undergraduates, postdoctoral researchers, established scholars, and non-professional historians; applicants must submit by email a CV, adviser letter or publication record, a two-page research letter, an archives/interview appendix, and a brief budget by the April 15 or November 15 deadlines. Decisions are made by an internal AIP panel (typically within weeks), grants are normally valid for about one year (six-month extension possible), and awardees must provide a 1–2 page completion report; direct questions to history@aip.org or nbl@aip.org.
