Harry Middleton Fellowship in Presidential Studies

About this program

The LBJ Foundation administers the Harry Middleton Fellowship to support scholarly research in presidential studies and to honor Harry Middleton; fellows must conduct research at the LBJ Library and at least one other National Archives facility, and the Foundation generally awards two $5,000 fellowships annually (larger awards possible for special circumstances). Preference is given to doctoral students whose dissertation research connects historical analysis to current or future policy issues, though postdoctoral applicants are eligible. Applicants must contact the LBJ Library Archives before applying and submit an online application including a 5–10 page research proposal specifying LBJ and other NARA collections to be used, a CV, proposed budget, and three letters of recommendation; deadlines are March 15 for the Fall term (June 1–Dec 31) and September 15 for the Spring term (Jan 1–Aug 31). Fellowship funds must be used only to defray research expenses during the award period, the research may not be used for political purposes, and recipients must provide the Foundation copies of any resulting publications.
