Herbert Warren Mason Fellowship — Retelling of Ancient and Medieval Myths and Legends of the Near East and Wider Mediterranean

The American Society of Overseas Research (ASOR) awards the biennial Herbert Warren Mason Fellowship—a $5,000 prize—to support scholarly, poetic, literary, or artistic projects that retell or reinterpret ancient and medieval myths and legends of the Near East and wider Mediterranean (including oral traditions and works of art); project manuscripts must be translated into English. Applicants may be students, scholars, poet-scholars, or artists worldwide, but must be ASOR members or affiliated with an ASOR institutional member; the fellowship is not being offered in 2026. Applications require a CV, a short proposal (up to 1,500 words) outlining the project, its relation to Mason’s oeuvre, feasibility and safety considerations, a simple budget showing how the $5,000 will be used (no indirect/overhead costs), and contact information for 2–3 recommenders (optional letters may be included). Submit materials as .docx or .pdf to programs@asor.org (postal submissions accepted); recipients must submit a written report within two months of the award period.
