Jacobs Research Funds (JRF) Grants for Research on Aboriginal Peoples of the Americas

About this program

Jacobs Research Funds (JRF) offers small grants to support fieldwork-based research with living aboriginal (indigenous) peoples of North and South America, giving priority to projects that produce new primary data (e.g., language documentation, digitization, transcription, translation), endangered cultures and languages, and work in the Pacific Northwest. Typical awards are about $3,000 USD (individuals up to $3,000; groups up to $6,000; occasional Kinkade awards up to $9,000, with Kinkade administered in CAD). Eligible applicants are individual researchers, multi-person teams, or Kinkade candidates; at least one researcher must hold a PhD or be advanced to doctoral candidacy or designate a Sponsor, and a researcher may appear on only one JRF proposal per funding year. Applications require specified online forms and PDFs (CVs ≤2 pages, Project Description ≤3 pages, Budget ≤1 page) plus two recommendation letters, and awardees must archive collected data in the University of Washington Libraries Special Collections; proposals follow the annual deadline (February 15).
