M. Hildred Blewett Fellowship — support for women returning to physics research

About this program

The American Physical Society administers the M. Hildred Blewett Fellowship, a one-year award of up to $45,000 to enable women to return to physics research after an interruption; allowable expenses include dependent care (limited to 50% of the award), salary, travel, equipment, and tuition and fees, while institutional overhead is not permitted. Eligible applicants are women who are U.S. or Canadian citizens or legal residents, or resident aliens eligible to work in the U.S. or Canada, who have completed work toward a PhD and can provide written proof of a U.S. or Canadian institutional affiliation for the grant term (actual affiliation at application is not required). Nominations must include one to three letters of recommendation (one may be from a designated mentor) submitted via the application portal and a letter of institutional support; one letter should address anticipated impact, planned research roles, mentoring, and connection to long-term goals. Selection criteria emphasize applicant qualifications and pre-break career status, documented steps taken to resume research, connection to the research community, and the scholarly significance and feasibility of the proposed project.
